Topic: Why Does It Matter?

We live in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Don't bother trying to pronounce it; you'll almost inevitably get it wrong, as most do, and that's just fine with us.

It's still just "here" for us.

haverhill

It seems like an ordinary place, although truth to tell, it has some rather special features, some special people, the subject, perhaps, of another post or two at another time.

It gives us a connection - geographical, not emotional; we already had the latter, as did so many people - to the terrible events in Connecticut last week.

KINGSTON, N.H. — Nancy Champion Lanza went to the same elementary school, Daniel J. Bakie Elementary, where her mother worked as a nurse.

Nancy’s children Ryan and Adam would have been in line to go there, too. But then Nancy and Peter Lanza, a Haverhill, Mass., native, moved with their children from Kingston in 1998, when the boys were 10 and 6.

Nancy Lanza, 52, a 1978 graduate of Sanborn Regional High School, was one of 27 killed in the Newtown, Conn., massacre Friday. Her younger son Adam, 20, is believed to be the shooter who killed her, 20 young children, six adults and himself.

That history changes little our understanding of what went on in that small, elementary school where children and adults died at the hands of an obviously psychopathic young man.

But it reminds us that people like Adam Lanza are very much among us and must, somehow, be accounted for, must engage our attention, cannot simply be ignored with a shrug of our collective shoulders and our hold on what passes for normalcy in our community. How we'll manage that I'm not sure, but that we must is not to be doubted, and I do not.

Not for a minute.

That's all.
