Danziger goes back to an earlier time, when I was in elementary school - we had no public kindergartens in those days - and when the perceived threats came from beyond our shores, from possible atomic bombs dropped from airplanes (there were no missiles then, either), a Cold War suddenly and terribly gone Hot.


There was no talk of gun controls then, because it was understood that guns might be needed to defend ourselves and our freedoms from a Communist enemy, the Soviet Union (or Russia, as we more often thought of it, of . . . them).

As, indeed, they might still be, but against an enemy inexplicably now within, instead.

I'm going to guess that historical context like that is not part of the cartoonist's echo.

Good guess . . .

I'm thinking.
