first thanksgiving

Once upon a time, so many years ago, at the celebration of the first Thanksgiving.

"The charter of the Plymouth Colony reflected the most up-to-date economic, philosophical and religious thinking of the early 17th century."

"Plato was in vogue then, and Plato believed in central planning by intellectuals in the context of communal property, centralized state education, state centralized cultural offerings and communal family structure."

Ah yes, the Platonic vision of civic virtue.

How's that working out for us?

Instead, we have our civic fantasy, perhaps - probably - as this sophisticated Age would have it on this day.

More fiction than fact, more myth than history.

But what's the harm of that?

Would that there were more, and better, moments and events in modern times, to warm our hearts and souls.

Would that we could give ourselves the warrant to feel good, not guilty, on more occasions during the year.

It's a hope . . .

For a change.
