In here, too.
How does the Higgs Particle give things mass?
The infamous Higgs particle has a weighty task: It grants all the other elementary particles their mass. Without it, they - we - would zip around frantically at the speed of light, too foot-loose to form atoms. But how does the Higgs do it?
I can only pray - fervently - that I will never be called upon to explain to others what all this means, or, indeed, to understand it beyond what I hope will be at least a modest grasp of the subject.
I have the same reaction each time I read beyond about page 5 of any book, written by Stephen Hawking or others, and meant to help me to understand my universe and how, theoretically at least, it might work.
Which is to say . . .
Over - way over - my head.
And, at the risk of putting too fine a point on it . . .
Completely and utterly lost.
